LH: Digipack Cover Analysis

Roots Manuva - Bleeds

  • This album cover gives a sense of mystery this can be told from the lack of any sort of typography on the front cover alone, in fact the only writing used on the whole digipack is for the track list of the album. The typography gives stands out by using an orange and simplistic font which comes across as bold, it is conventional for Roots Manuva.
  • The cover is predominantly using very dark colours of black and orange which in certain places mixed together to create a sort of brown effect. The cover almost seems as if it has been brushed over with an orange paint, to give a sort of worn down effect to the digipack. Overall the choice of dark colours gives a somber feel to the album as a whole which is conventional for his star image as he discussed many deep, meaningful and aggressive topics when he raps.
  • From the mise-en-scene on the front cover there are many things that we can tell about the artist, the black jumper with the hood up is a conventional sign of youths and commonly being up to no good. This is particularly conventional of this artist, it can be said that the target audience of Roots Manuva would be this sort of individual, showing how he creates a star image positioning himself from a similar standpoint to his audience.
This will help us for our actual production, seeing as the artist I have looked at here takes a very similar stance to Loyle Carner, in fact he says Roots Manuva was one of his biggest influences. I like the style of this digipack, using bland colours in a minimalist scheme, reminding me of the Dada art movement.
