JB: Music Video Ideas

Music Video

Loyle Carner – Tierney Terrance

  •  A montage of still secondary images of him and his father are used to create verisimilitude and para social intimacy between the audience and the singer because the photographs show how times have moved on in this case his father has died which creates a somber tone of sympathy from the audience.
  • The camera constantly moves through the rooms of the house which show an insight into Loyle Carner’s home life and therefore make the audience believe that they have a stronger connection with the star.
  • Mother and brother break the fourth wall by looking straight at the camera even though they are made to be looking at the television, this again creates an air of verisimilitude because they are oblivious of the camera and clearly relaxed.

  • Loyle Carner talks in the song about being cold and needing someone to keep him comfortable, this is then implied by him sitting on a warm sofa wearing a lumber jacket with his mother.
  • After taking a drink the star clearly breaks the fourth wall creating a striking connection with the audience and engaging them once again.
  • Loyle Carner talks about having no ‘male figure’ in his life and this is reinforced by the fact that there are no adult male figures in the video again creating sympathy for the singer because he has no instrumental figure in his life.
Dr. Dog – The Truth

  •  A montage of secondary footage of trains is used all the way through. This footage is all relatively old which fits the vintage style of the song and makes the song seem older.
  • Text is composited onto the screen which acts as a layer for the ‘background’ of the moving trains.
  • The camera is never still which reinforces the idea of movement, connoting travel.

Alt J – Breezeblocks

  • The entirety of the music video is in reverse with the final scene occurring first and working backwards from this final point. This gives the audience an insight into why his has happened, who it has happened too and for what reason.
  • The storyline consists of one line of continuity editing of the sad progression of domestic violence leading to a murder, because the storyline is so powerful there isn’t a huge amount of editing techniques used apart from the obvious ‘reversing’ technique which is used well to slowly portray the unfolding of a story.
I     In terms of using these styles in our actual video, we plan to implement time manipulation in the same style of Alt J, we plan to do this by using time expansion to portray meaning of sadness and tenderness. In addition to this, we also plan to take inspiration from Dr. Dog's - The Truth, as we like the use of location in train stations and the mise-en-scene of props such as trains as we believe these offer accurate representations of feelings on a train.

  1. Well done Jack, detailed response to this track. Are you considering using any of these videos when planning your own production?
